If you're planning a wedding and wondering how to get photos with everyone you love without spending half your day stuck in formal portrait mode, hear me out.

From behind the camera, I've watched this play out at wedding after wedding and there's a pattern worth sharing.

Today I'm talking about something I always bring up with my couples: capping your formal Family Portraits list and capturing additional group photos during Cocktail Hour and Reception. Loop your planner in on this idea early, they'll love you for it, and watch it transform your entire day. Thank me later.

What I See Happen During "Family Portraits"

When parents hear "Family Portraits," they often go wild coming up with their own wish list, which usually doesn't match what you'd prioritize. And listen, I get it. As your Carmel wedding photographer, I can tell you love every single person you invited and want a picture with all of them. We want to capture that for you!

But your designated Family Portrait window is meant for the most important people in your life: immediate family, grandparents, siblings, chosen family. These are the structured, "smile and look at the camera" shots that you'll frame and pass down.

Here's what I've witnessed shooting 150+ weddings, these portraits are so important (and honestly some of my favorites to shoot), but they take longer than anyone expects. Plan for about 3 minutes per grouping, that adds up fast. We're reminding everyone to empty their pockets, remove sunglasses, fix ties and boutonnieres, smooth down hair, catch hair ties on wrists, and track down the uncle who wandered off to grab a drink. It's basically herding a group of slightly-tipsy cats while repeating the same directions ten times. Bigger list = longer wait = your smile slowly migrating from 😁 to 😬. We've all seen the photos.

The Cocktail Hour & Reception Solution

One of the most common things I hear from inquiring couples is: "We don't want to disappear for two hours after the ceremony." And honestly? Same. You shouldn't have to.

This is the advice I give all of my couples and it's a game-changer: cap your formal Family Portraits list at 15 combinations and create a separate shot list for Cocktail Hour and Reception. And don't worry, we'll still nail your formal portraits. They'll just be the right length, not the entire afternoon.

This one shift levels up the experience for everyone.

Instead of thirty people standing around waiting for their thirty seconds in front of the camera, your extended family and friends get to actually enjoy Cocktail Hour. They can grab a glass of local wine, snack on passed appetizers, chat with cousins they haven't seen in years, use the restroom without panic, and soak in your gorgeous venue. No one feels like they're stuck in line at the DMV waiting for their turn with you.

And from what I see through the lens? When I catch your group during Cocktail Hour or swing by that table at the Reception, the photos come out more relaxed, more candid, and honestly more you. People are warmed up, laughing, holding a drink, and genuinely happy to be there.

Why This Matters for Your Monterey Wedding Day

Carmel wedding venues, whether you're saying "I do" at a coastal estate in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a vineyard in Carmel Valley, or a historic property in Monterey, deserve to be experienced, not just photographed from one stationary spot. The ocean breeze, the cypress trees, the golden hour light bouncing off the coast, you didn't pick this place by accident. Let yourself actually be in it.

Capping your formal list means you get to actually enjoy Cocktail Hour and your Reception. You'll dance more, eat more, laugh more, and have real conversations with the people who showed up for you. Your photos will reflect that joy because we're capturing real moments instead of forced lineups. The candid shot of your dad belly-laughing with your college roommate? That's the photo you'll print. Not the lineup.

Here's the bottom line. So when you're working through your timeline with your planner, bring this idea to the table. Keep your Family Portrait list focused on your nearest and dearest, and trust me to find everyone else throughout the night. Future you, sipping a drink on the dance floor instead of posing for the 47th group photo, will thank present you. 🥂
