San Francisco
Bay Area

Yes, the Golden Gate Bridge was the main character

San Francisco has been the location where a huge part of Nicole + Ryan's lives together has been shared. So when it came to their Engagement Session, they wanted to celebrate the city and really really wanted to feature the iconic Golden Gate Bridge as much as possible, and that's exactly what we did.
Typically people want a nice, warm, sunny day for their session, which makes sense since you won't run the risk of being cold, hair frizzing over, and can get that gorgeous golden hour light that so many chase. But few recognize the magic that foggy overcast skies bring.
The light is perfect, all day long
Overcast skies act like a giant softbox. No harsh shadows, no squinting, no blown highlights. Your skin looks smoother, tones are even, and everything feels calm and flattering instead of contrasty and aggressive.
Fog adds instant drama and depth
Clear skies are pretty. Fog is cinematic. It creates layers, movement, and mystery. The Golden Gate doesn’t disappear, it reveals itself slowly. Every frame feels intentional, emotional, and a little bit magical.
It feels iconic, not touristy
Bright blue skies can make photos feel postcard-y. Fog instantly elevates the vibe. The images feel editorial, timeless, and unmistakably San Francisco instead of “we were visiting and got lucky with weather.”
Colors look richer and more refined
Muted skies make everything else pop in a subtle, elegant way. Neutrals look expensive. Dark tones feel moody. That International Orange? Absolute perfection against fog.
You get intimacy without distraction
Fog simplifies the scene. Fewer visual distractions, fewer people lingering, more focus on connection. It feels quieter, more private, more romantic.
It’s uniquely San Francisco
Anyone can shoot the bridge on a sunny day. Karl the Fog is part of the city’s personality. Choosing a foggy session is choosing the real San Francisco.
It photographs exactly how love feels
Soft. Layered. A little mysterious. Very unforgettable.
So when you have a session planned and you see a forecast of fog or overcast skies, lean into it, not away from it. This is part of the iconic San Francisco experience and it’s a kind of magic you won’t regret.
